"Helping Children Blossom" Fundraising Event

Barbara Harrison and John Kelly

CASA's Board of Directors was thrilled to welcome more than 150 guests who attended our "Helping Children Blossom" fundraising event on March 22nd. The festivities included a silent auction and raffle, music, and delectable food, catered by Ridgewells, all against the beautiful backdrop of Glenview Mansion in Rockville. Barbara Harrison of NBC4 News presented the "Barbara Harrison Child Advocacy" award, named in her honor, to Washington Post columnist John Kelly for his work on behalf of children. The award recognizes individuals who make a difference in the lives of children in need and display exemplary leadership in child advocacy. Thanks to the support of so many community members and donors, CASA of Montgomery County raised over $30,000 to support the recruitment and training of more CASA volunteers.

A Child Is Waiting

Avery* (age 7), Luke* (age 4) and Ben* (age 3), came to the attention of Child Welfare Services (CWS) in the fall of 2013, when allegations of physical abuse and neglect by their mother and her boyfriend were reported. During their investigation, CWS learned there were ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence in the home. In-home services were offered in an attempt to prevent the removal of the children but were unsuccessful. Consequently, the children were removed from the home and placed with a maternal relative, where they continue to reside. CWS is working with the children's mother on a plan to reunify the family. All three children could greatly benefit from a CASA volunteer who would have the time to meet with them regularly and who would advocate for their best interest while they are under the Court's jurisdiction.

Volunteers Spotlight

Jennifer Ashby was assigned to the cases of Brittany* and Brian* in November of 2011. Brittany and Brian initially became involved with Child Welfare due to issues of neglect. The children's mother suffered from mental health and substance abuse issues. She admitted to Child Welfare that she had difficulty managing the children and became easily agitated with them. Since Ms. Ashby's assignment to the case, Brittany and Brian have been in four different placements. Ms. Ashby strongly advocated for stability and for the children's permanency plan to be changed to Adoption by a Non-Relative, as it did not appear that their mother would be able to care for them long-term. Their mother's parental rights were terminated in November of 2013. Brittany and Brian were formally adopted in April of 2014.

Rosario Allauca-Castillo  has been working with her CASA child for eight months. Victor* is 14 years old and came to the attention of Child Welfare in March 2011, when he reported that his mother and her boyfriend hit him frequently. For over two years, Victor and his mother worked with individual and family therapists to rebuild their relationship and in October 2013, Victor was reunited with his mother. He expressed that he very much wanted to play soccer, but his school did not have a team. Ms. Allauca-Castillo researched soccer clubs in the area and found one that agreed to waive the registration fee. The club director also agreed to provide equipment and transportation for Victor, and he began practicing with the team in March, 2014 and plans to continue participating with the club. Victor's case closed in late April 2014. Thanks to Ms. Allauca-Castillo, Victor now has a connection with a supportive coach and soccer club who are interested in making him a part of their community.
